The robot spacecraft Galileo encountered and photographed two asteroids on its way to Jupiter. This image from 1993 shows Ida, a potato-shaped asteroid about 36 miles long, with its tiny moon, Dactyl. Dactyl, about one mile across, was the first moon discovered orbiting an asteroid.
