Hoag's Object: A Strange Ring Galaxy
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
Astronomer Art Hoag discovered this unusual extragalactic object in 1950, sparking the question of whether it's one galaxy or two. The outside is a ring of bright blue stars, while near the center is a ball of much redder, likely older stars. Between them is a gap that appears almost completely dark. How Hoag's Object formed is still unknown, but similar ring galaxies have since been identified.
