COSMIC MESSAGE
Stars, gas, and dust are in constant interaction within the Lagoon Nebula, also known as M8. This nebula is visible even without binoculars toward Sagittarius. Energetic star formation creates both the colors and the chaotic forms seen here. The red-glowing gas comes from high-energy starlight hitting interstellar hydrogen, while dark dust filaments were created in the atmospheres of cool giant stars and supernova debris.
