COSMIC MESSAGE
Discovered in 2003, Comet C/2003 K4 (LINEAR) surprised astronomers with its unexpected brightening. This image captures it as it was becoming visible to the unaided eye, even showing a tail nearly the length of a full Moon. Comets are notoriously tricky to predict, but this one put on a good show. It was discovered by the LINEAR project, which searches for near-Earth objects.
