Comet Hale-Bopp and the North America Nebula
NASA APOD · Juan Carlos Casado
COSMIC MESSAGE
In 1997, Comet Hale-Bopp passed through the inner Solar System, creating a spectacular display. This photo captured it near the North America Nebula, an emission nebula in Cygnus. The comet, with its yellow dust and blue ion tails, was only about eight light-minutes away. The nebula, a star-forming region, is much farther, at 1,500 light-years.
