On October 7, 1959, the Soviet Luna 3 probe took the first pictures of the Moon's far side. This stamp celebrates that achievement. Luna 3 used 35mm film, developed on board, then scanned and transmitted to Earth. We saw this hidden hemisphere for the first time because of this mission.
