M106: A Spiral Galaxy with a Strange Center

NASA APOD · Ali Al Obaidly
COSMIC MESSAGE

Spiral galaxy M106 has a strange center. The image, taken from the Kuwaiti desert, shows a swirling disk of stars and gas, with prominent blue spiral arms and red dust lanes near its nucleus. The core glows brightly in radio waves and X-rays, where twin jets run the length of the galaxy. This makes M106 one of the closest examples of a Seyfert galaxy, characterized by vast amounts of glowing gas around its active galactic nucleus.
