The Helix Nebula from Blanco and Hubble
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
The Helix Nebula is a planetary nebula, and its shape holds clues to how stars like our Sun end their lives. Recent observations by the Hubble Space Telescope and the 4-meter Blanco Telescope in Chile show the Helix is not a simple helix. Instead, it incorporates two nearly perpendicular disks, as well as arcs, shocks, and other features not yet fully understood. Despite its complexity, it shows striking geometric symmetries.
