Tentacles of the Tarantula Nebula

NASA APOD · WFI, MPG/ESO 2.2-m Telescope, La Silla, ESO
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Tarantula Nebula is a giant emission nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud, our neighboring galaxy. Inside this cosmic arachnid lies a huge central cluster of young, massive stars, cataloged as R136. The energetic light and winds from this cluster illuminate the nebula and sculpt the surrounding gas and dust into vast, complex filaments, which give the Tarantula Nebula its name.
