The Crab Nebula is the remnant of a star that exploded in 1054 AD. It is filled with complex filaments that appear to have less mass than expelled in the original supernova. This image from the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) uses three colors chosen for scientific interest. The Crab Nebula spans about 10 light-years.
