M78: Stardust and Starlight

NASA APOD · Stephan Messner
COSMIC MESSAGE

M78 is a reflection nebula in Orion, about 1,500 light-years from Earth and 5 light-years across. Its bluish tint comes from interstellar dust reflecting the blue light of hot, young stars in the region. This sharp widefield view shows M78 just below the center, surrounded by other dark dust lanes and nebulae.
