Gravitational Tractor

COSMIC MESSAGE

One concept for altering the course of an Earth-threatening asteroid is a 'gravitational tractor'. This artist's view illustrates a massive spacecraft using its own gravity to tow an asteroid. In this scenario, a 20-ton nuclear-electric spacecraft hovers near a 200-meter asteroid, its ion thrusters angled away from the surface, to subtly shift the asteroid's path.
