This image from the SOHO spacecraft shows a spectacular solar prominence, a common but impressive feature. A prominence is a cloud of solar gas held above the Sun's surface by its magnetic field. This particular prominence, seen in October 2002, was large enough that over 40 Earths could fit along its length, informally dubbed a 'flame'.
