NGC 869 & NGC 884: A Double Open Cluster

NASA APOD · Thomas V. Davis
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Perseus Double Cluster, NGC 869 and NGC 884, is a pair of open star clusters visible to the naked eye from dark locations. Hipparchus cataloged these clusters, though their discovery likely predates written history. They are over 7,000 light-years away in the constellation Perseus. Each cluster contains hundreds of young, hot, blue-white stars, making them a brilliant sight.
