The Crab Nebula, M1, is the first object on Charles Messier's list of non-comets. It is an expanding cloud of debris from a massive star's death explosion. Astronomers on Earth first witnessed this stellar catastrophe in 1054. This Hubble Space Telescope mosaic spans about twelve light-years and is composed of 24 exposures.
