Moon Over Antarctica

NASA APOD · James Behrens (IGPP, Scripps Institution of Oceanography)
COSMIC MESSAGE

Last week, from Davis Station, Antarctica, the nearly full Moon set along the northern horizon. The Moon's squashed, orange pumpkin shape is due to atmospheric refraction, which bends light more severely closer to the horizon. The Moon's lower edge appears noticeably more distorted than its upper limb as it skims low along the frozen landscape, silhouetting a distant iceberg.
