The Tarantula Nebula

NASA APOD · Brad Moore
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Tarantula Nebula, also known as 30 Doradus, is an immense star-forming region in the Large Magellanic Cloud. It appears spidery, giving it its popular name. This tarantula is about 1,000 light-years across and 180,000 light-years away in the southern constellation Dorado. If it were as close as the Orion Nebula, it would cover a significant portion of the sky.
