These striped sand dunes in Kunowsky Crater on Mars were photographed by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's HiRISE Camera. Scientists are not sure why they are striped. Many Martian dunes are unevenly covered with carbon dioxide, or dry ice, frost, creating patterns of light and dark areas as the dry ice sublimates directly into gas.
