COSMIC MESSAGE
This image of Mir was recorded by astronauts as the Space Shuttle Orbiter Atlantis approached the Russian space station in 1996. Mir, with its spindly appendages and solar panels, resembles a whimsical flying insect. It hovered about 350 kilometers above New Zealand's South Island. Mir was launched 20 years ago this week and was continuously occupied until August 1999.
