Solar Eclipse and SOHO

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The space-based SOlar Heliospheric Observatory, SOHO, watches the Sun's outer atmosphere, the corona, from 1.5 million kilometers sunward of Earth. From our planet, the lovely coronal streamers and structures are only visible during a total solar eclipse. This composite view combines a SOHO image of the Sun's disk with an Earth-based photo of the corona during the March 29, 2006, eclipse. It highlights the vast extent of the Sun's outer atmosphere.
