Vanishing Umbra

NASA APOD · Stephan Heinsius
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Moon's dark central shadow, or umbra, is vanishing beyond the horizon in this dramatic view of a total solar eclipse. This photo was taken a few kilometers southeast of Incesu, Turkey, during the March 29, 2006, eclipse. The large, snow-covered mountain in the distance is the 3,250-meter-high volcano Hasan Dag. The foreground is beginning to brighten as sunlight peeks around the lunar limb.
