Comet Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 made a rare close pass to Earth, allowing for detailed observations. This time-lapse sequence shows Fragment B of the comet over Colorado, USA. The comet is actively crumbling, with large fragments passing about 25 times the Moon's distance from Earth. These close approaches offer unique opportunities to study cometary disintegration.
