Sunspot Loops in Ultraviolet
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
This ultraviolet image shows the Sun on a relatively quiet day. Even then, its surface is a busy place. The dark regions are cooler, but still thousands of degrees Celsius. Sunspot group AR 9169 is visible as a bright area near the horizon. The glowing gas around sunspots can reach over a million degrees Celsius, a temperature thought to be linked to magnetic activity.
