The space shuttle orbiter Discovery approaches the launch pad at Kennedy Space Center. This May 2006 photo was taken just before mission STS-121, which sent Discovery to the International Space Station. The orbiter, booster rockets, and external fuel tank ride on one of NASA's workhorse crawler-transporters. Discovery moves slowly to the pad, but once in orbit it circles Earth at 27,000 kilometers per hour.
