Milky Way Behind Three Merlons

These three peaks, known as the Three Merlons or Three Peaks of Lavaredo, are made of dense dolomite rock. This rock has resisted erosion better than the surrounding softer material. They formed about 250 million years ago, a time comparable to one of Earth's great extinction events. Behind them, the faint band of the Milky Way stretches across the sky.
