IC 4628: The Prawn Nebula

NASA APOD · Martin Pugh
COSMIC MESSAGE

IC 4628, the Prawn Nebula, is an emission nebula in Scorpius, about 6,000 light-years from Earth. Hot, massive stars nearby emit ultraviolet light, which ionizes the hydrogen, sulfur, and oxygen atoms in the nebula. When these atoms recombine with electrons, they emit light, creating the nebula's glow.
