Sun Storm: A Coronal Mass Ejection

COSMIC MESSAGE
The Sun-orbiting SOHO spacecraft captured this image of a Coronal Mass Ejection, or CME. These events involve the Sun blasting enormous bubbles of magnetic plasma into space. In this view, direct sunlight is blocked to better show the expanding CME, which extends over two million kilometers from the solar surface. CMEs are powerful solar eruptions that can impact Earth.
