COSMIC MESSAGE
M81, a spiral galaxy similar in size to the Milky Way, is one of the brightest galaxies in our sky. It lies 11.8 million light-years away in Ursa Major. This deep image reveals details in its bright core and fainter features along its blue spiral arms and dust lanes. A dwarf companion galaxy, Holmberg IX, with a large star-forming region, is visible above M81.
