The Horsehead Nebula

NASA APOD · Nigel Sharp
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Horsehead Nebula, also known as Barnard 33, is one of the most recognizable nebulae, part of a large, dark molecular cloud in Orion. Its unusual shape was first seen on a photographic plate in the late 1800s. The nebula's darkness comes from thick dust, while the red glow behind it is hydrogen gas ionized by the bright star Sigma Orionis.
