The Trifid Nebula in Stars and Dust

NASA APOD · R. Jay GaBany (Cosmotography.com)
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Trifid Nebula, also known as M20, is a region of star formation in Sagittarius. Red-glowing gas is hydrogen energized by high-energy starlight. Dark dust filaments, created in the atmospheres of cool giant stars and supernova debris, lace through the nebula. This energetic environment creates both the colors and the chaos seen in the image.
