This dark expanse on the Sun is a coronal hole, a low-density region where the Sun's magnetic field opens into space. The picture, taken by the SOHO observatory's EIT instrument, shows it in extreme ultraviolet light. Coronal holes are known to be the source of high-speed solar wind.
