Ferdinand Magellan's crew named these two dwarf galaxies, the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds, during their trip around Earth. The Small Magellanic Cloud, seen here, spans about 15,000 light-years. It is a satellite galaxy to our own Milky Way, containing hundreds of millions of stars.
