COSMIC MESSAGE
Galaxy NGC 474 displays a complex system of shells, which is unusual for an elliptical galaxy. The cause of these shells is still being investigated. They might be tidal tails, debris left over from NGC 474 absorbing smaller galaxies over the past billion years. Alternatively, the shells could be like ripples in a pond, created by an ongoing collision with the spiral galaxy to the right.
