The N44 Complex

COSMIC MESSAGE
N44 is a giant complex of emission nebulae, spanning about 1,000 light-years. It is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud, our neighboring galaxy, 170,000 light-years away. Winds and intense radiation from hot, young stars excite and sculpt the glowing nebular gas. Supernovae, the explosions of massive stars, have also contributed to the region's enormous, blown-out shapes.
