Spiral Galaxies in Collision
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
These two spiral galaxies, NGC 2207 and IC 2163, are slowly pulling each other apart. This interaction creates tides of matter, shocked gas, dark dust lanes, and bursts of new star formation. Astronomers predict that the larger galaxy, NGC 2207, will eventually absorb IC 2163. The most recent close encounter peaked about 40 million years ago.
