Two-Armed Spiral Milky Way

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Astronomers used the Spitzer Space Telescope to survey the Milky Way, providing evidence that our galaxy is a large, two-armed barred spiral. These arms, known as the Scutum-Centaurus and Perseus arms, emerge from a large central bar. From a distant galaxy, an observer would likely see our Milky Way as a two-armed barred spiral, similar to this conceptual image.
