Descent of the Phoenix

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

This sweeping view shows the 10-kilometer-wide crater Heimdall on Mars's north polar plains. The inset highlights the Phoenix lander parachuting towards the surface. The HiRISE camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter captured this amazing picture on May 25th. Although it appears the lander is dropping into Heimdall, it is actually descending about 20 kilometers in front of the crater, closer to the foreground.
