Baily's Beads near Solar Eclipse Totality
NASA APOD · Leonid Durman
COSMIC MESSAGE
Just before the Sun is completely covered during a total solar eclipse, bright beads of sunlight stream around the Moon's edge. This phenomenon, known as Baily's beads, is named after Francis Baily, who drew attention to it in 1836. Modern lunar maps allow astronomers to predict the general features of Baily's beads. This image shows a single prominent bead just before totality.
