Rings Around the Ring Nebula

The Ring Nebula, M57, is more complex than it looks through a small telescope. Its central ring, about one light-year across, is visible, but deep exposures reveal looping filaments of glowing gas. This composite image combines data from three large telescopes, showing hydrogen's red light along with visible and infrared light. The nebula is an elongated planetary nebula, expanding into space.
