Irregular Galaxy NGC 55

COSMIC MESSAGE

Irregular galaxy NGC 55 is about 6 million light-years away and is part of the Sculptor Galaxy Group. It is thought to be similar to the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of our Milky Way. NGC 55 spans about 50,000 light-years and is seen nearly edge-on. This gives it a flattened, narrow appearance.
