A Sharper View of a Hazy Giant

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

This image of Jupiter is one of the sharpest ever taken from the ground. It was captured using the MAD instrument, the Multi-conjugate Adaptive optics Demonstrator, on one of the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescopes in Chile. MAD works in infrared light, using multiple guide stars and deformable mirrors to correct for atmospheric blurring.
