A Sun Pillar Over North Carolina

NASA APOD · Terry Holdsclaw
COSMIC MESSAGE

A sun pillar is an unusual column of light that appears when the Sun is rising or setting in cold air. Flat, six-sided ice crystals fall from high-level clouds, and air resistance causes them to lie nearly flat. Sunlight reflects off these properly aligned crystals, creating the pillar effect, as seen in this 2007 photo from North Carolina.
