The Dumbbells

COSMIC MESSAGE
These two planetary nebulae, M27 and M76, are known as The Dumbbell and the Little Dumbbell. Both are gaseous shrouds cast off by dying Sun-like stars, each about a light-year across. In these images, taken at the same scale, the apparent size difference is mostly because one is closer to us than the other.
