NGC 2736: The Pencil Nebula

NASA APOD · Ken Crawford
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Pencil Nebula, NGC 2736, is a shock wave plowing through space at over half a million kilometers per hour. These thin, braided filaments are ripples in a sheet of glowing gas, seen almost edge-on. This nebula is about 5 light-years long and 800 light-years away. It's only a small part of the much larger Vela supernova remnant.
