AE Aurigae and the Flaming Star Nebula
NASA APOD · Jorge Garcia
COSMIC MESSAGE
AE Aurigae is known as the Flaming Star, and the surrounding nebula IC 405 is the Flaming Star Nebula. Despite the names and appearance of red smoke, there is no actual fire. Fire requires oxygen, which is not abundant in these high-energy, low-oxygen environments. The 'smoke' is mostly interstellar hydrogen, mixed with some carbon-rich dust.
