Satellites Collide in Low Earth Orbit

NASA APOD · Analytical Graphics, Inc.
COSMIC MESSAGE

Satellites rarely collide in the vastness of space, but in 2009, two full satellites did. A defunct Russian communications satellite, Cosmos 2251, smashed into an operational US Iridium 33 satellite over Siberia. Both were destroyed, creating a significant amount of new space debris.
