The Helix Nebula from La Silla Observatory
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
The Helix Nebula is one of the brightest and closest examples of a planetary nebula. It's a gas cloud created at the end of a Sun-like star's life. The star's outer gases were expelled into space and, from our perspective, look like we are gazing down a helix. The remnant central stellar core, destined to become a white dwarf, glows energetically, causing the expelled gas to fluoresce.
