Auroras are caused by energetic electrons and protons hitting molecules in Earth's atmosphere. They typically occur above 60 kilometers in altitude, sometimes reaching up to 1000 kilometers. This rare purple auroral corona was observed over Norway in 2004. When seen from space, a full aurora often forms a circle around one of Earth's magnetic poles.
