A Prominent Solar Prominence from SOHO
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
A vast cloud of solar gas, held above the Sun's surface by its magnetic field, erupts in this SOHO image. These prominences are not unusual, but this one from 2004 was impressively large. Our entire Earth could easily fit beneath this hovering curtain of hot gas. While typically lasting about a month, some prominences can erupt as a Coronal Mass Ejection.
