Sunspots on a Cloudy Day

NASA APOD · Stefan Seip
COSMIC MESSAGE

On June 2, 2009, clouds over Stuttgart, Germany, parted to reveal sunspots on the Sun. The Sun's activity cycle, which is roughly 11 years long, was in a surprisingly deep minimum. 2008 and 2009 had the lowest sunspot counts since the 1950s. The sunspots seen here are in active region AR 1019, part of the new Solar Cycle 24.
